Inside ASASI Canggu: Where Bali's Menswear Story Began
CANGGU, BALI — Long before Ubud, Pererenan or Nusa Dua, Canggu is where ASASI first opened its doors. It remains the beating heart of the brand on the island: a working showroom for the same philosophy that runs through every ASASI shirt, short and pair of linen trousers — foundational, functional, uncomplicated.
A Store Built Around the Way Bali Actually Dresses
Canggu's mix of surfers, remote workers and long-term expats gave ASASI its first real audience, and the store reflects it. Rails run from the Origin and Affine linen shirts through to the Vāyu and Kavash t-shirts, with linen pants, shorts and the leather goods and footwear that round out a full wardrobe for island living. Nothing in the store is designed for a runway. Everything is designed to be worn the next morning, in the heat, and to still look considered by the evening.
Cotton-Linen, Chosen for This Exact Climate
Every piece carries the same fabric logic wherever it's stocked: breathable cotton-linen blends, organic cotton and hemp, chosen because they perform in Bali's humidity rather than despite it. Canggu customers tend to buy for repetition rather than occasion — a Vāyu tee they'll wear three times a week, an Origin shirt that goes from a work call to dinner without changing.
What You'll Find There
Long and short sleeve Origin shirts, the Affine and Opulent shirt lines, Vāyu and Kavash t-shirts across their full colourways, Origin shorts and linen pants, and ASASI's leather goods: belts, wash bags and the Double Strap and Noble Slides footwear. Staff are used to fitting first-time visitors head to toe in a single visit, which is still the fastest way to understand what the brand is about.
Visit ASASI Canggu
Canggu remains open daily, stocking the full current-season range alongside pieces from earlier collections while stock lasts. If you're building a Bali wardrobe from scratch, it's the store where the whole ASASI range is easiest to see in one place.
The Neighbourhood That Shaped the Brand
Canggu in 2023, when ASASI opened its first store, looked different from Canggu today. The rice fields along Batu Bolong were still visible from the main strip, the coffee shops doubled as coworking spaces before that was a trend anywhere else, and the crowd walking through the door was almost entirely people who'd moved to Bali rather than people visiting it for two weeks. That distinction mattered more than it sounds. A customer living in Canggu year-round buys differently to a tourist: fewer holiday pieces, more of the shirt they'll wear three times a week for the next two years. ASASI's early collections were built around that customer, and the habit stuck even as the brand expanded to Pererenan, Ubud and Nusa Dua.
What's Changed Since the Store Opened
The Canggu store has grown alongside the brand rather than staying static. Where the early rails were mostly Origin shirts and a handful of linen shorts, the current layout runs the full range: the Affine and Opulent shirt lines for evenings, the Vāyu and Kavash t-shirts in every current colourway, linen pants from Tobacco through to Black, and a proper footwear and leather goods section that didn't exist in the first year. The store has effectively become ASASI's flagship in the sense that it's usually the first place a new colourway or line lands before it rolls out to the other three.
Who Actually Shops There
Ask the Canggu staff and they'll tell you the customer base splits fairly evenly three ways: long-term residents restocking a wardrobe they already know, first-time visitors who found the store through a friend's recommendation rather than search, and a growing number of people who come in specifically because they saw a piece on someone else in Canggu and asked where it was from. That third group is a reasonable proxy for how word of mouth still outperforms marketing for a brand like this — you see the shirt on someone at a café before you see it anywhere online.
Stay understated.
